GENERAL LABOURER POSITIONS
Perform labouring duties on a daily basis for the maintenance of various City facilities, parks, roads, cemeteries, infrastructure and golf courses. Operate a variety of equipment, light duty vehicles, machinery and power and hand-held tools. Labouring duties include climbing, lifting, balancing, kneeling, stooping, walking, handling materials to assist in the maintenance of City facilities and infrastructure. You will be required to work in all outdoor environments.
The Summer work-term for a General Labourer Summer Student position will commence early May and runs until Labour Day in September and you must be available to work the whole work term. You are required to be available to work rotating shifts and weekends and you may be assigned to work at one of many locations across the City of Hamilton.
Assignments will be in the following sections:
Parks/Cemeteries/Horticulture
- In this capacity preference will be given to candidates with landscape construction and/or parks maintenance, cemetery maintenance, garden centre/greenhouse, agricultural, marina backgrounds and to students that have completed a minimum of 1 year in Horticultural College or University programs. You are required to be available to work rotating shifts and weekends. You may be required to work in remote locations within the City.
Play Structures
- In this capacity preference will be given to students with shop, construction, and/or painting experience.
Golf & Stadium Operations
- Students hired by Golf & Stadium Operations may be required to rotate between the municipal golf courses and the stadium as needed. The summer work-term for this area commences late April and runs until Labour Day in September. In this capacity you may be required to work early mornings (6:00 a.m.), days, weekends and afternoons (approx. 4:00 p.m. – midnight), including statutory holidays – Canada Day and Labour Day, depending on scheduled events. Preference will be given to students that have turf management care, groom and lawn care, previous golf course maintenance, and to students that have completed 1 year (or 2 semesters) of studies in Turf Management. Additional labouring duties include: general maintenance of facility and properties; use of small engine equipment and hand tools such as groomer, mower, leaf blower; event and game day set up, monitoring and tear down.
Waste Collection
- Students hired in our Waste Collection section will assist full-time crew in the collection of waste throughout Hamilton. Must have excellent hand/eye coordination and have sufficient physical strength and ability to lift, move, pull, push bend, reach, grip, step, walk, drive, twist, climb, squat and carry objects weighing up to 23 Kg (50 lbs) or more if designated to provide bulk collection service with a partner independently and repeatedly. During the summer months, general work hours are 6:00 am – 2:00 pm.
Roads
- Students hired in our Roads section will be responsible for assisting full-time crew with road maintenance. This will include use of handheld power tools, shoveling tar, directing traffic and other duties as assigned. Students with previous experience in construction, engineering, or skilled trades will be given preference.
Traffic
- In this capacity you will be required to work 10 hour shifts. This can include night shifts (9:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.). You must be able to work at heights ranging from ground level to 20’ off the ground (either off a platform vehicle or ladder) and you must be able to regularly lift up to 70 lbs. You must also be comfortable working alongside moving traffic. Proper Health & Safety training is provided prior to starting work. A POINT/DEMERIT FREE Class “G” driver’s license (non-probationary) is mandatory.
Forestry
- Students in this role will assist in the planting, removal, storm debris clean up, and general maintenance of trees throughout Hamilton. Preference will be given to candidates that have completed a minimum of 1 year studies in Arboriculture, Horticulture or Science. A POINT/DEMERIT FREE Class “G” driver’s license (non-probationary) is mandatory.
Fleet & Facilities
- Students working in this section will maintain the outdoor property of City owned facilities, such as grass cutting, hedge trimming, fountain maintenance, and other duties as assigned. In this capacity you will be required to be able to lift 30 lbs to 50 lbs and possess a POINT/DEMERIT FREE Class “G” driver’s licence (non-probationary)
Dundurn Castle Historic Kitchen Garden
- Students hired for this position will work with Dundurn’s Garden Demonstrators in all aspects of garden maintenance and interpretation. This role will be conducted with both modern and period-appropriate equipment, methods, and clothing. Garden maintenance will include seeding, planting, watering, weeding, raking, shoveling, pruning and harvesting. Students will provide visitor orientation and tours of the garden, and assist with special events. Preference will be given to students with previous experience in museums, historical interpretation, education and/or customer service roles. The Kitchen Garden is staffed 7 days a week 9:00AM – 4:30PM (rotating schedule), staff must be available to work some evening and weekend shifts as required
NOTE 1: As some of the positions within this category require you to drive a City vehicle, you must have a current Class G licence, free of demerit points. Students holding a Class G1 or Class G2 will not be permitted to drive a City vehicle. If you possess a driver’s licence, please make notation of the class of your driver’s license on your resume.
